Another sky is punksible

Javiera Rayen Rivera López, Speech therapist, University of Chile

Chile, Santiago, Gran Avenida, a scare, a fall, her daughter’s scream. This was the moment when Angela had her first stroke (cerebrovascular accident). Immediately, Luna, Angela’s daughter, bites her index finger to call the ambulance. In this day and age, there are no cell phones, the body is technology itself.

Luna already knows what happened, because there have been many cases of stroke lately , usually caused by the stress of the neoliberal system. All humans of that time know the symptoms, so she reported everything to the paramedic and the nurse.

The ambulance arrives and they leave together in it.

Upon arriving at the hospital, Luna punched her index finger into a machine that showed her entire medical history. The doctor did the same with Angela’s hand for her admission.

Neuro5 team was called , which consisted of: a neurologist, a speech therapist, an occupational therapist, a kinesiologist and a nurse. But in this punk world, cultural and artistic workers, land workers and trades workers also participated in the health system.

This paradigm shift occurred due to a popular revolution that was started by women from a community in a territory called El Olvido , who demanded their reproductive rights and, among them, decent health care. Everything began little by little, protests and community communication strategies were organized with surrounding organizations, which allowed for a Great Demonstration.

Luna, together with friends, supported several protests and now health has become a political and public priority. Women and gender dissidents lead this community health movement throughout the country; they fought for a loving libertarian punk society.

Angela began her therapy and one of the first interventions was to go to the nearest park and have contact with nature. This activity was the most important, because international capitalist companies exploited the territories. Angela was happy and her family accompanied her and learned from her care. After her stroke, Angela had speech difficulties and what she wanted most was to speak again and tell her husband Diego that she loved him. However, Diego had died, he had been murdered for being part of the Environmental Workers Union; Angela had not yet experienced her grief due to the accelerated and alienating pace.

The therapeutic process had its principles such as integrity, rights, care and self-care networks, connection with the environment, community-libertarianism and affection being paramount.

During therapy, Angela had been able to achieve her goals thanks to the constant help of the occupational therapist and her ability to challenge the ableism of the system that still persisted in society.

Angela began to write with her index finger in the air and on her body as an act of love to herself.

One day Luna accompanied her mother to the writing workshop and each one wrote to the other “ I love you, you are brave” on her legs and hands. A kind of light came out from her index fingers that when placed on the skin became marked in violet, that was the color that mother and daughter decided for that moment.

The index finger was powerful, but Luna was sure that another finger could have another power. The next day she met with her friends and they talked about this. They were teenagers, they wanted to continue building a punk society , so that night they got together to carry out a punkAction (name given to a street protest activity) they chose the red and black color of the index finger to write on the walls of the city: The citypunk era will come.

Luna, at 16 years old, was a bookworm of feminist readings just like her friends, but a few days ago she started reading about pleasure and enjoyment , something she was embarrassed to talk about and that night after coming home from her punk action she masturbated but with her index finger, and left a trace of black and red on her vulva. A revolutionary scene.

Luna was so full of love that she wrote a poem on her body:

I want to be free

I want to taste new experiences

I want to burn the system

I want to hug my sisters

and live simply.

Let’s take heaven by storm!

The next day she went to see her mother at the Community Rehabilitation Center, where the Garden Workshop teacher was and they were planting seeds. They had them hidden because the powerful men of the current government wanted to steal them to sell them abroad and thus make a lot of money.

Mother and daughter planted and laughed. This activity was recommended to them by their occupational therapist, called Priscilla, since doing an activity in community heals not only the physical aspect, but also the emotional one. They watered the plants and looked at the sky. Both were healing, Angela from the loss of her husband Diego and Luna, on the other hand, from the loss of her father and her confusion with the world.

They were happy and with their index fingers they wrote a slogan in the sky in violet:

Together we will heal

Together we will flourish

Angela took a red carnation, her psychomotor skills had improved, she closed her eyes and with her little finger she raised the carnation to the sky, it seemed like magic. Luna looked amazed and with shining eyes she said I KNEW! She knew there was another finger with powers. Her mother told her that this was a family secret, since no one in society took that finger into account, it was a hindrance and useless according to the government . However, it was powerful and it was the union with the ancestors. Both of them, seeing the red carnation in the sky, wrote to Diego with their index fingers as a manifesto of struggle and perseverance.
